CFDLab@Energy - Computational Fluid Dynamics Laboratory - STAFF - EMANUELA COLOMBO

Emanuela Colombo has achieved both a PhD in Energetic and a Nuclear Engineering MSc at Politecnico di Milano in Italy where she is currently Associate Professor in Applied CFD and Energetic within the School of Industrial Engineering 
She has also gained a considerable working experience in different industrial energy sectors: 
•             In 1995 was project engineer for “Ansaldo Energy” and “ABB Research” 
•             In 1997 jointed Fluent France in Paris, a branch of Fluent Inc. (now ANSYS-FLUENT), working in the field of computational fluid dynamic and contributed to the opening of the Italian office 
•             In 1998 named technical team manager of the new born Fluent Italy 
In 2001 she has moved to an academic career where her interest were originally focused on heat transfer devices and, processes for power generation, turbulence phenomenology and modeling.  She is author of more than 70 scientific papers presented in national and international conferences and published in international journals.
From a Scientific perspective she has been developing in recent years a strong interest in the interrelations between Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development as well as to the complex issue of the Access to Energy in developing countries. 
In line with this interest in 2004 she was one of the founders and currently the Vice President of Engineers Without Border in Milan a volunteers organization which aims at promoting sustainable development and cooperation among countries. Since 2010 she  has been member for Politecnico di Milano in the Scientific Committee of the “Access to Energy” Laboratory promoted by the Energylab Foundation in cooperation with universities, entrepreneurs and players from the civil society.
From an institutional point of view, for her personal and professional interest in 2005 she was named Deputy of the Rector to Cooperation and Development at Politecnico di Milano where she is still working for promoting the role of the  academic research as leverage to face the challenges of global development and human promotion. In 2011 she was in addition named Rector’s Delegate to the international relationship with Africa.
She is in charge of a number of local, national and international programmes operating both from a scientific and a managerial perspective
•             In 2004 coordinator of the international CFD Group acting inside the international IRIS consortium coordinated by Westinghouse for supporting the design and licensing of the IRIS reactor (generation 3plus) .
•             In 2006 created the Network of Universities working on Cooperation and Development (CUCS) which today includes 25 Universities in the North of Italy and works jointly with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the civil society organizations and local institutions.
•             Since 2007 program manager of the Technological Observatory established between Eni E&P and Politecnico di Milano, It  focus on breakthrough innovations in the oil and gas sector. 
In 2009 she has been awarded by the Club Mille Miglia Foundation in Italy as “courageous intelligence” for her research interest and social commitment. For her experience on energy for sustainable development, since 2006 she has been working as international expert for the United Nation Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO)
